I recently had the opportunity (misfortune) to watch American Sniper. To make a review short, it was a waste of my time. Thank god I didn’t actually pay to see it. It’s 2 hours of my life I’ll never get back.
In the longer aspect; how can this not be anything but a propaganda movie. The movie spends a great deal of time vilifying Muslims in general and Iraqis in particular. This could have been done so much better, as the entire movie sort of just pans over the fact that the main character suffered from PTSD after returning home. As it stands, the movie should have been called American Psycho II: This Time It’s War.
It’s filled with designs to make the “hero” seem like a hero, complete with flashbacks to when his father took him hunting. Explaining that you have to stalk and be patient and lead your targets. Which only makes him look all the more psychotic when it gets put into the perspective of him killing people. Let me put that in all caps for emphasis; killing PEOPLE. HUMAN BEINGS!
Granted, a read through Chris Kyle’s book and you find that he is indeed a psycho, as he says he didn’t kill enough Iraqis. The movie would have been better suited to take a close look at what veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have to deal with. How they are ill prepared to return to public life after spending so much time in a warzone.
For those who don’t know, Kyle was killed at a shooting range by a veteran he was attempting to help who suffered from PTSD.
Seth Rogen wasn’t wrong, though, that the movie American Sniper wasn’t any different than the fictitious movie Nation’s Pride, seen in Quinton Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. It was propaganda and nothing more. It has only been successful in the increase in attacks, vitriol and hatred toward Muslims in general and Iraqis in particular.
If you want to see a good sniper movie, watch Enemy at the Gates. If you want to waste two hours of your life, and be filled with disgust and hatred for humanity, watch American Sniper.
