The Way I See It: Need for action

51j2kxwzftl_ss500_CPSIA has been getting a lot of press.  Tons, as a matter of fact.  And that’s a good thing.  People who have an opinion about a very distasteful law need to speak out, and they need to be heard.  Fortunately, there are a lot of people that do this.  Thanks to authors like Neil Gaiman and David Niall Wilson, word is spreading.  That’s a good thing.  Word needs to spread, and people passionate about books, especially older books, need to be heard.  Even small businesses have been getting involved, and from what I’ve read at Overlawyered, U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) has introduced legislation to exempt books from the CPSIA law.

Now Canadians have to do the same thing.

038000293001_sclzzzzzzz_CCSPA is the Canadian version of the CSPIA.  And it essentially will be looking at the same aspects of the law as the CPSIA.  I’ll have to do some more research, but presently I’ve heard nothing about Canada’s version as I have about the CPSIA.  April 1st, a rally on Capital Hill is planned, to let politicians know of the concerns from citizens, businesses and others who believe the law to be an all encompassing white wash.  Essentially zero tolerance of lead contents in products.  I’ll watch what happens and report here how things went.

Something similar needs to be done in Canada.  I remember years ago when agriculture industry sounded out gloom and doom, tractor trails of farmers trekked from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to Ottawa to let their voices be heard about how dire the situation was.  Do we have to do the same now with the CCPSA?  Maybe, it seems to be one of the ways to get heard in Parliament.

Canadians need to examine this law very carefully and see exactly what it is all about.  If it is anywhere close to being what the CPSIA is, then politicians need to be told about the uproar it’s causing south of the border.  Write to your local MPs and ask for clarification on the law.  Once it’s nuances are fully disclosed can someone make an educated decision about the law itself.  But if it’s anything like the CPSIA, then a voice needs to be heard.

Until next time…

…keep ‘em flyin’!
