The Annoyance of E-mail

04 Jul

emailiconMade to be simple, easy and the fastest way t receive news. E-mail is slowly becoming more and more annoying due to spam.

No I’m not talking about the canned meat product. I’m talking about the advertisements for anything from “Prescription Drugs” to “Larger Penis.” Every so often I will go on a unsubscribe binge and unsubscribe from all the spam mail that comes through my general email box, only to get more a few minutes later. Other times I hit the empty button and delete all the spam in the box.

Tim and I often joke and treat our spam like trading cards. It’s not odd to hear in our ventrilo, “hey Tim, I got enlarge penis, dates and drugs, what do you have to trade?” We all laugh about this and he’ll reply with big boobs, porn sites and any variety of SPAM that he’s received. This usually happens when we are deleting the spam box. Sometimes we check that emails from people we know don’t end up there.

internet_abuse_spamRecently I’ve been aiming to get my mail box down to 0 spam messages, just for one stinkin’ day.  I know it’s a vain thing, and will probably never happen but I can dream can’t I.

The origin of spam according to Wikipedia seems to have come from Monty Python skit:

It is widely believed the term spam is derived from the 1970 SPAM sketch of the BBC television comedy series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus“.[11]

The sketch is set in a cafe where nearly every item on the menu includes SPAM canned luncheon meat. As the waiter recites the SPAM-filled menu, a chorus of Viking patrons drowns out all conversations with a song repeating “SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM… lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM”, hence “SPAMming” the dialogue. The excessive amount of SPAM mentioned in the sketch is a reference to British rationing during World War II.[citation needed] SPAM was one of the few meat products that was excluded from rationing, and hence was widely available.

While this is hilarious. SPAM isn’t. I can’t begin to tell you how much I am starting to despise getting SPAM. Heck even getting email in general is pretty bad because people have found a way to get past the keywords and programmable flags to prevent this email onslaught of bigger boobs and penises.

I actually deleted one of my many email accounts due to the amount of spam I received in just one week. 1,423 spam emails in just one week,  And that was in my normal mail box. Over the course of one year that means I would end up with 73,996 spam emails in my regular everyday email account. The last time I looked at the spam box there was about 9,050 SPAM emails. I’ve gone through several email programs that usually ended in me deleting the account due to the amount of SPAM I was receiving.

It isn’t just my email that is getting hit over and over again by the same emails from the same companies I previously unsubscribed from. It’s everyone’s. However it’s not just emails that’s getting Spammed, it’s blogs, instant messengers, mobile phones and even video games.

spamgraphAlso according to Wiki The United States has the highest amount of SPAM sent world wide at 28.4%. This number doesn’t surprise me. America is an international and technological epicenter.

Crimes because of SPAM have led to people being shorted hundreds of thousands of dollars, kidnapped, and even killed. There are even viruses attached to some SPAM, which can destroy your computer and anyone you contact. These can also allow people access to your computer and do further damage without you know it.

spam7While email will remain the quickest way to receive anything from a joke your grandmother sent you to ways to make easy and fast cash or find an easy date. SPAM will undoubtedly follow each of those emails. I do know that in some places, sending SPAM is illegal, I wish they would do that for the rest of the world as well and eradicate these stupid and pointless thing that not so smart people willingly click on,  to see what it’s all about. When or if this ever happens, chances are I won’t be around to enjoy it.

Please keep in mind, for your own safety and privacy. NEVER give out your e-mail, password or anything that is personal information to anyone you DO NOT know. Unsubscribe from SPAM with caution and check for possibly dangerous and computer threatening websites.

Keep it real and rockin’

Tim’s Hijack

Yeah, I know, this is a few days late.  But something happened that was all kinds of ironic.  Zodi detailed the annoyance of spam in the inbox.  Here at WordPress, there’s a handy utility that will filter out spam comments, and let you review them in case they actually have relevance.  Well, this didn’t have relevance, but it was all kinds of ironic.  Click the image to see a larger view.

This I find funny and ironicUntil next time…

…keep ’em flyin’!

Fortunately, I get very little spam outside of my spam folder, which I delete in bulk once a day. It blows my mind that there are people out there still uneducated enough to not realize the danger of giving out their password and personal information. That would have been like walking up to a stranger back in the 80’s, handing him a pickaxe and saying, “I live at 1442 Loveland Drive, Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Please come break into my home, steal my things and murder my family. Thanks.”
