Today is the day when all good buccaneers let out their normal feelings and give a good holler for talkin’ like a pirate.
Originally began by John Baur and Mark Summers of Albany, Oregon on a lark, the day has grown in popularity. It all began on June 6, 1995 when the pair where playing racquetball, and the reaction to an injury was “AARRR!!”. Out of respect for D-Day, the holiday was moved to the same day as Summer’s ex-wife’s birthday, which was easy to remember. The pair contacted humourist Dave Barry in 2002. Barry liked the idea and promoted it, and since then it’s grown internationally.
Robert Newton, who portrayed many a pirate in films, is considered the Patron Saint of Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Treasure Island, by Robert Lewis Stephenson, is considered the best for piratey like talk, including such phrases as “Dead men don’t bite” and “Shiver me timbers”. It also includes the lyrics to the sea shanty, Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum
