Stop Alvaro Orozco from being deported to Nicaragua, where he could be killed for being gay

If Alvaro Orozco is deported from Canada to his native country of Nicaragua, he could be killed by his own father. Why? Because Alvaro is gay.

Alvaro fled Nicaragua when he was just 12, after repeated beatings from his father who threatened to kill any child of his that was homosexual. Now, Alvaro is a 25-year-old artist living in Toronto — and an advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

Canada actually has an excellent policy of providing asylum to LGBT people who face persecution in their home countries. But in 2007, Alvaro was denied asylum because his immigration case adjudicator said he didn’t look “gay enough.”

Alvaro’s 2007 hearing was reported in the Nicaraguan press, effectively outing him to the entire country and making it even more dangerous for him to be sent back. And still, Canadian officials refuse to help.

Alvaro could be deported any day. That is why a broad community movement has sprung up to support him, writing letters and holding supportive rallies.

Michael Erickson — who is running to be a Member of Canadian Parliament — started a petition on Change.org asking Canadian immigration officials not to deport Alvaro. Please click here to add your name now.

Jason Kenney is Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. He has the power to grant a minister’s permit that would give Alvaro permanent resident status in Canada — and even save Alvaro’s life. But Alvaro could be deported any day now, and Minister Kenney still has not taken action.

No one should be killed — or threatened to be killed — for being gay. Please sign the petition today to tell Minister Kenney to let Alvaro stay in Canada:

Thanks for taking action to save Alvaro.
