Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy DayToday is Family Literacy Day.  It’s encouraged that families take time today and read to their children.  But many organizations are suggesting that such activities be more than just this 24 hour period.  That it should be something the entire family can participate in every day of the year.

The ABC Canada Literacy Foundation, along with FLD Founding Sponsor Honda Canada, are attempting to make certain that reading becomes a part of our daily lives.  This includes various events around the country, highlighted by a reading by legendary children’s author Robert Munsch.  As well, Canada set a record for preregistering at more than 1000 events to read Munschworks 2 for 30 minutes.  That was held on January 23 and 24.  190,576 people participated, which was well over the current record of 78,791 held by the United States.

family readingABC Canada does more than just Family Literacy Day.  ABC Canada is a private sector voice, championing adult literacy.  Reading is a very important aspect of life, and is the first step to obtaining gainful employment.  This is why ABC Canada assists with adult learning, workplace literacy and sponsoring such events as Family Literacy Day.

So, take some time today (and tomorrow, and the next day), open up a book, read with your family.

Until next time…

…keep ’em flyin’!
