2014: In Review – Representation

2014 has been a mixed bag when it comes to representation.  By that, I’m talking about the representation of visible minorities and those who have different sexual orientations.  I say it’s a mixed bag due to the fact that it hasn’t been exactly the best year for such things.

We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of really good authors, both up and coming and some long time authors, make big strides in writing books and putting characters into them that do represent people of colour, women of colour, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.  So we’ve got a good representation there.  But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.

Books, while good, aren’t visual catching.  Comic books, Television and movies, on the other hand, are pretty in your face when it comes to representation.  And this year has been pretty whitewashed, male, and heterosexual.  In other words, the same bland crap we’ve received all the time in the medium.  There have been strides, however.  The excellent tumblr blog DC Women Kicking Ass has gone out of it’s way to showcase good comics (not just from DC) that not only feature women, but a diverse range of women.  Storm came out this year, Ms Marvel had a great run this year, doulby good considering the book is about a Pakistani American teenager.  Captain Marvel, and others.  Marvel Comics has done well with their stable, but that doesn’t mean there’s still some flaws there.  It took them a while to finally announce a female lead movie in Captain Marvel, but the fanbase is still waiting on one for Black Widow.  And it hasn’t been sunshine and rainbows for female lead books, there’s been some cancellations, such as the Fearless Defneders, for example.

Meanwhile, the Distinguished Competition hasn’t been doing much better.  Trying to follow in Marvel’s footsteps, they’ve announced a great deal of movies that are forthcoming with Wonder Woman being in the mix.  How it’s going to turn out is unknown at this point in time.  But at the comic book level, things haven’t been doing so well.  Female lead books aren’t doing well.  One of the best written books is being cancelled after a hack kneed decision of making sure superheroes don’t lead happy lives was announced.  Batwoman won’t get married, and to add insult to injury, the current writing team (who replaced the original writing team) decided a kidnapping and rape would have been a great story arch to the series.  There’s also the Huntress, both Wayne and Bertinelli.  Helena Wayne was essentially stuffed in a refridgerator, and Helena Bertinelli is hardly recognizable as the daughter of a mob boss anymore.  One good light is that the Secret Six is back, written by the pre-52 creator Gail Simone.

Outside of the big two, there’s been other promising titles, such as Bitch Planet written by Kelly Sue Deconnick.  So, there’s some progress, but it’s painfully slow.  Here’s hoping 2015 picks up the pace a bit.

Movies haven’t exactly been great either.  The biggest disappointment was Exodus: Gods and Kings, where every character is portrayed by a white person which is strange for a region that is predominantly filled with brown skinned people.  And to those who say that white Europeans were traveling around, think again.  It was Middle Eastern and South East Asian people (Arabic, North African, Pakistani and East Indian) who developed the Silk Road.   The movie didn’t do well at all at the box office, and one comment said it all.  For people of colour, don’t think of Exodus: Gods and Kings as a missed opportunity but as a bullet dodged.

It isn’t all bad, though.  We’ve had a lot of really great discussions and education with people who have been working hard to turn the old stereotypes on their heads.  Laverna Cox and Janet Mock, along with Laura Jane Grace have been really working hard to show that transgender people are just everyday ordinary people.  And that there is a huge difference that comes up in interviews with transgender people as opposed to cisgender people.  There’s differences in the interviews with gay and lesbian people than there is with hetero people.

And there year did come to a close with a picture perfect ending.

Korrasami

The Nick cartoon, Legend of Korra ended on a bang of a hote, as the finale for Book four showed something incredible.  For the first time in a kids cartoon (in recent memory, at least, and completely visible), Korra walked off into the sunset (spirit portal) with Asami, marking a same sex relationship.  This was confirmed by series co-creator Bryan Konietzko:

You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story. We received some wonderful press in the wake of the series finale at the end of last week, and just about every piece I read got it right: Korra and Asami fell in love. Were they friends? Yes, and they still are, but they also grew to have romantic feelings for each other.

The only downside to all of this, is that it’s taken so long.  We’re almost at 2015, and we’re still fighting to have proper representation in books, comics, movies, and television.  We made some gains, but there was an equal number of failures and fumbled balls.  Hopefully, 2015 will see more major wins as far as representation goes.

A Marvel movie that should be made

Marvel Studios (as previously mentioned) is on a massive role with their movie properties.  They’ve hammered out several movies, all within the same universe, all leading up to one massive story line.  Why not get ready for a new set of heroes to come to the forefront.

Jess_Carol_01

Captain Marvel and Spider-woman.

You could even go so far as to just call the movie Captain Marvel, and have Spider-woman as the added hero as seems to be the trend in the Marvel movie franchise.  So far it’s been a series of dudes as side kicks or appearances in the main movies (War Machine, Hawkeye, Bucky, Falcon), with even minor characters who play a very important role not even taking the center stage in the title.  I mean, do you think we’re ever going to have a Nick Fury movie?

But Captain Marvel could set the stage for something new and different.  Adding to the already new and different Ant-Man & Wasp I suggested earlier.  This could be the Marvel movie that turns things on it’s head.  In the comics, Captain Marvel becomes leader of the Avengers, so it’s a natural stepping point.  Spider-woman could even be an agent of Hydra that Carol manages to convince to quit and join her in destroying a Hydra cell.  Carol could even be a fighter pilot (as she’s depicted in the comics), could have gotten her powers at some point through the attack on New York in Avengers.  Carol could see potential in Jessica Drew and instead of fighting to put Spider-woman behind bars, fights to free her from Hydra.  All of this would fit neatly into the existing Marvel Studios movie series.  It would also set it up nicely for a new cast of Avengers (Chris Evans has mentioned he doesn’t want to act for much longer).

Just think of it; a New Avengers team with Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Spider-woman, the aforementioned Wasp, and….

She-Hulk_Dialogue_1

She-Hulk was created not to be the porn version of the Hulk (as Stan Lee himself pointed out by smashing David Goyer’s statement).  She was Bruce Banner’s cousin, and received her powers from an emergency blood transfusion from Banner.  So far, so good.  Jennifer Walters also remains in her green skinned, kick ass self ALL THE TIME!  The difference between the Hulk and She-Hulk is that Bruce is scared about his ability and it’s destructive nature, whereas She-Hulk finds it empowering.  She loves it and accepts it.  It also helps that she retains her mental capabilities while in She-Hulk form.  So yes, she can revert back to her normal looking Jennifer Walters look.  BUT SHE DOESN’T WANT TO!

This would be a good premise for a second (third) Hulk movie.  Jennifer could be the secondary hero, who eventually joins the ranks of the Avengers, using her cousin as a role model in a way (and Jennifer could conversely be a role model for Bruce, as she’s able to coexist with the big green rage monster within her).

So there you go, Marvel.  Two movie ideas to swing into a third Avengers movie.  Now go do it.

Superhero movies that need to be made

(art by Terry Dodson)

Wonder Woman

This one is a no brainer.  The ancient Amazons and the myths of ancient Greece.  Having trouble trying to “figure her out” because she’s “tricky”?  Maybe you need to watch 300 again, and this time replace the 300 warrior with nothing but women, and King Leonidas replaced with Princess Diana.

Black Widow

She’s been in Iron Man, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and the Avengers.  It really wouldn’t surprise me if there was some deep, secret cameo in Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and in the coming Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  It’s about damn time we got a solo movie with Black Widow.  The background on Natasha would make Wolverine wet his pants in fear.

Hawkwoman

Take note, that says Hawkwoman, not Hawkgirl.  Yeah, this one is a bit of a biased one because I’m probably the biggest Hawkwoman fanboy/fangirl/geek around.  I’d love to see a version of Shayera written by Gail Simone.  With the Birds of Prey.  But in movie form, Hawkwoman would make a great sci fi adventure.  Ditch Hawkman and just have Shay dealing with the societal problems on Thanagar between the rich and poor as a lone cop, charged to hunt down and bring Byth Rok to justice.

She-Hulk

Lawyer by day and… well, pretty much a green rage monster without the rage, but all the strength and… well, greenness.  Contrary to David S. Goyer’s comment about She-Hulk, Jennifer Walters is more of a power fantasy (both male and female).  Incredible strength, near invulnerability, yet she keeps her cognitive abilities.  She can think and reason as the She-Hulk to the point where it becomes easier for her to just BE the She-Hulk 24/7.  She chooses to be She-Hulk and isn’t scared by it.  You could even have that tradition that Marvel has started by having Bruce Banner as a part of the movie.  He’d be a minor character, but he could still be in it.

Captain Marvel

One of the few female characters that doesn’t have a gender specific code name, Carol Danvers would be a high flying adventure.  As noted with She-Hulk, you could even have Spider-woman and Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) make appearances.

These are just the ones I came up with off the top of my head (hell, you never know Ms. Marvel and Spider-woman might be great solo movies as well).  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to give telepathy a try and drop a suggestion into gailsimone‘s head that she should lobby for a new Birds of Prey with Huntress/Helena B, Black Canary, Batgirl, and bring back Lady Blackhawk and Shayera Thal/Hawkwoman.

Ya never know, it might work.

This is not a complete list, I may come up with more at some point.
