Summer Sizzler

This weekend is Summer Sizzler in Humboldt!  I tweeted about the parade.  Which almost ran in front of my apartment.

I am fully aware that you could not see the piper in that last picture, even if you squinted really hard.

Thursday evening random times

We’re gonna pay for that

That’s a comment I’ve heard a lot from people when it comes to weather.  I’ve even said it myself.  We have a nice June.  We’re gonna pay for that come January.  We have a nice October.  We’re gonna pay for that come December.  But you never hear the opposite of that.  You never hear how we’re going to have a nice January because we had a really shitty March.  Like we had this year.

This year, we also had a nice summer.  It was hot, it lasted well into September, and even fall is great.  The weather is cool, but it’s not miserable.  But now, people are saying, we’re gonna pay for that.  That’s just the thing, though.

We already did!

We had a really shitty March, and an equally shitty April.  We set records for the amount of snowfall in March within the first half of the month.  March had more snow in this province than the entire winter combined.

So really, this is our due.  We’re getting a nice autumn because mother nature shit on us back in March.

The high cost of living

It’s quite an eye opener, but I’ve sort of been given a rather unique perspective on the differences in expenses between Outlook and Humboldt.  First, let me give a detailed list of the differences between the two communities.

Outlook

  • pop. around 2500
  • on Highway 15, a tertiary highway in the province
  • close enough to Saskatoon, but far enough away to not be a bedroom community
  • Number of 24 hour stores: 0
  • Number of stores that stay open until 9:00 pm throughout the week: 1.
  • major tourist attractions: Lake Diefenbaker (accessible throughout spring and summer), Dakota Dunes Casino (open year round); Dakota Dunes golf course (open during regular golfing season).
  • main economy: agriculture

Humboldt

  • pop. around 6500
  • on Highway 5 travels east and west through Humboldt; Highway 20 travels north and south through Humboldt; both highways have a great deal of traffic
  • close to Saskatoon, but not close enough to be a bedroom community; doesn’t need to be, it’s classed as a city in Saskatchewan
  • Number of 24 hour places: 10.
  • Number of stores that stay open until 9:00 throughout the week: a couple dozen.
  • major tourist attractions: Humboldt Broncos SJHL franchise; within driving distance of several lakes; within driving distance of several provincial parks.
  • main economy: agriculture, minerals and mineral resources

This all adds up to something rather interesting.  Thanks to the increase in population and the convenience around Humboldt, the price of housing is drastically different.  When I lived in Outlook, a two bedroom apartment went for $570 a month.  Here in Humboldt, it’s on average $725 a month.  And to purchase a house is nothing to sneeze at.  Average prices for a two bedroom bungalow in Outlook run about $150,000.  Here in Humboldt, the average sits around $300,000.

It’s gonna be a while before I look at buying a house.  And you never know, by that time I might have to move again.

Autumn Trees

Yesterday, I took several photos from my balcony of the autumn trees.  The colours are coming out nicely, and it’s great to have so many trees around my place.  So here’s a few photos to help brighten up a Monday morning.

Sounds & Laundry

The Humboldt railway station (located in Humboldt, Saskatchewan) was built by the Canadian Northern Railway along the Winnipeg to Edmonton mainline. The 1 1⁄2-story, wood-frame, railway station was completed in 1905. The last CNR passenger train (#9 and #10) ended service in 1963 with service restored in 1978; Via Rail railliner served the station in 1980. The building was designated a historic railway station in 1992.

Sounds

It’s interesting when you move to a new place, the different sounds you hear from your apartment.

In Outlook it was quiet, with the odd car that would rumble by on Thomson Street, sometimes going a little too fast.

Here in Humboldt, it’s much different.  Not only is it a larger community (by Saskatchewan standards, it’s a city), but my apartment is on Main Street, which is where Highway 20 comes into Humboldt from the south and exits north out of the city.

So there’s more traffic.

But there’s also other sounds, not related to the street.

South of my apartment is the clock tower that’s part of the old post office.  It’s the museum now, and on the hour it chimes.  Chime isn’t an accurate word, more like “bong”, as it has that heavy bell sound like you’d hear from a church when it’s being rung.  But one chime or bong for each new hour.

There’s also the train.  In Outlook, there was no train, as the rail lines were closed down years ago.  The last train ran on the tracks in the late ’70s.  In the early 2000’s, the train bridge was converted to a walking bridge and is part of the Trans Canada Trail.  So there hasn’t been a train in Outlook for several decades.  But here in Humboldt, there’s a train, and when it comes through town it blows its horn.  The tracks run a bit further south that the old post office, so it’s not loud, but I can hear it from my apartment.

It’ll take some getting used to, but it’s interesting to just listen to the different sounds from my balcony or inside my apartment.

Laundry

Had to do some massive loads of laundry yesterday.  It went by pretty fast, considering I had four loads I had to do.

The great thing is there’s four machines; two for washing, two for drying.  Even better; while the washing machines are $2.00 per load, the driers are free.  No forking out coins to keep drying at the end of a cycle because your clothes are still wet.  I guess I could still get a clothing rack, but there’s not really any place to put it that wouldn’t see water getting on my carpet (unless I put down a plastic sheet).

Questions I’ve been asked about my recent move

You had two weeks off before you started at your new job, that must have been relaxing.

No, actually, it wasn’t.  That was, in my opinion, the worst two weeks off I’ve ever had.  There was the packing and cleaning and unpacking (some of which still has to be done) and changing numbers and hooking up power and getting the phones changed over (both my house phone and my cellphone, though the latter was painless).  All of it was completely filled with anxiety and anticipation, because while I had a place to stay, I couldn’t move into it until a certain date.  So for the first week, I lived in an apartment filled with packed up boxes.  There were two days I felt relaxed; the first day and the Thursday before I started at my new job.  That was it.

Has your first week been boring?

Anything but.  It’s been fast, as there’s been lots to do and lots to learn.  But it’s also been long, as there has been so much to learn.  While it’s no different than my old job, there are vast changes that I’ve had to learn and things that I used to do that I had to change.

Have you had the opportunity to look around Humboldt yet?

No, not yet.  I haven’t really had a chance to walk around and see the sights, so to speak.  The first weekend I was here, my parents came in on the Saturday, so I was focused on them.  The Sunday I just wanted to relax, not worry, and take some time for myself.  This weekend I plan to actually do some walking around, and pick up a few things that I need around the apartment.

How do you feel about this entire experience?

I’ve gone through this before.  I’ve had to move from one place to another over the course of my life, so it’s not something unfamiliar.  I’ve never had the comfort of living in a place as long as I had when I was in Outlook.  Now, I just hope that I can put in the work and show that I’m worthy to stay on long term here in Humboldt and then I’ll have another place where I can have a long time to live and work and play.  This recent experience has filled me with excitement for my new apartment, new job, new co-workers.  It’s also filled me with dread because I have new co-workers and there’s always an underlying feeling that I may fail when I try to show what I can do.  I just have to try and be open to new ideas and try new things.  As for the living arrangements, I’m comfortable here.  Much more so than when I lived in Outlook.  It’s probably because everything is so new, but it’s also because I seem to have a lot more space.

What next?

What next?  Just keep on living, I suppose.  I’ll get to writing and working and enjoying life here.

Still settling in

DSCN0958

So last night, just as I’m heading to bed, I took a last look at my bookshelf and thought “Ya know, I bet I could fit those books down there”.  About five minutes later, I had rearranged things once again.

I have a large collection of Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, all of which used to be my Grandfather’s.  Those ones, along with the Star Trek hardcovers (all of which I found at a Value Village for two bucks each), fit neatly on the last two shelves.  I still have room for more books, and I’ve still got all my graphic novels and many of my over sized books I’d like to get arranged.

There is a lot of arranging I still need to do, such as do a huge round of laundry, get a second bookshelf, get new dvd/vcr racks to organize my movies, and do some more work in my office (to actually have a different room for my computer is nice, no arranging my living space around my internet connection).  I also want to get a TV, DVD player and a VCR (yes, because I still have tapes).

Something I do enjoy is the view from my balcony, especially in the morning when I have my coffee.  It’s not high up, but it’s nice when the sun’s rising.

Here is the view from my balcony at my new place.  It’s been a week since I moved in (Wednesday will be the first official week that I’ve been here without driving back to Outlook).

There’s a golf course across the street from me, so it’s rather quiet, save for the fact that Main Street here in Humboldt also happens to be Highway 20 (the highway runs north and south and comes into Humboldt and becomes Main Street).

Right across the street is a set of condos that are called Fairway Four Estates.  Obviously some golf references, which makes sense considering how close it is to the golf course.

Settled in

After a long three days of moving, driving, packing, cleaning, it’s all done.

livingroom

I’m now set up in my apartment, and today is my first day of work at my new job.

This weekend I’m planning on going around town and taking a few pictures of things that interest me, and things that look really cool.  I’ve already got a couple of things in mind, such as the old post office which is now the museum, the provincial court house that has a small park beside it, and a few other places around town.

It’s exciting, and hopefully this move will not only give me new challenges at work, but sort of give me a kick start to my creativity and help with my writing.

office

Speaking of which, my office is set up in a good location.  It’s in the spare bedroom and it was great that I got fixed for wireless Internet.  I’m not bound to making sure my computer is near an outlet.

I’m also quite happy with my book layout, and will be getting some added help from my father with setting up a shelving system that better displays my books.  Plus I have an area where I can have a TV and DVD player set up.  Which, after looking in the local flyers, I think I’ve found a decent one that I’ll pick up at some time.

bookshelves

As you can see, the space for a TV is already set, I just need to get some things organized. And get a TV.

All in all, I’m excited about my new place, this new city and this new job.

The Cleanup

The last cleanup is almost done, which means that all the anxiety I’ve felt over the past few days is starting to wane. I just have to have the final walk through of my old apartment and this chapter of my life is complete. It’s been a hard few weeks, but I got a lot of help from people.
Rob and Lisa Pederman, who moved all of my furniture. My parents who helped me a great deal with cleaning. They got most, if not all of the heavy work done.
I’ve enjoyed my time in Outlook, nine years is a long time.
Here’s hoping I’ll be in Humboldt for just as long, if not longer.
